Does converting MP3 to WAV improve quality?
No, and no converter can. When an MP3 is made, the encoder throws away sound it expects you will not notice, such as very high frequencies and quiet details masked by louder ones. That information is gone, so converting MP3 to WAV cannot bring it back. The WAV is an uncompressed copy of what the MP3 decodes to: it sounds the same and is roughly ten times larger. Choosing 24-bit or 48 kHz does not add detail either. For better quality, go back to the original recording, a CD or a lossless download.
So why convert? Because WAV is what editors, CD burners and many upload forms expect, and because editing a WAV and saving it again adds no new compression loss, while re-exporting an MP3 compresses the sound a second time.
WAV vs MP3: what is the difference?
MP3 is a lossy format built to keep music small. WAV (Waveform Audio File Format) stores raw PCM samples with no compression, the same kind of audio that is on a CD.
| MP3 | WAV | |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossy, typically 128 to 320 kbps | None (PCM) |
| Size per minute (stereo) | About 1 MB at 128 kbps, 2.4 MB at 320 kbps | About 10 MB at 44.1 kHz 16-bit, 17 MB at 48 kHz 24-bit |
| Three-minute song | About 3 to 7 MB | About 30 to 52 MB |
| Re-saving after edits | Loses a little quality each time | No loss |
| Best for | Listening, sharing, streaming | Editing, CDs, video projects, pro uploads |
Renaming a file from .mp3 to .wav does not convert it: the audio has to be decoded and written out as PCM, which is what this converter does.
Which WAV settings should you choose?
The defaults suit most people. Change them only when your software or platform asks for something else.
Sample rate
44.1 kHz is the CD standard and matches almost every MP3. Choose 48 kHz for video editors, YouTube projects and broadcast work, which run at 48 kHz.
Bit depth
16-bit is CD quality and the most compatible. 24-bit gives a DAW more headroom for effects and mixing, at 50% more file size.
Mono or stereo
Keep stereo for music. Mono halves the file size and is fine for voice recordings, podcasts and phone systems.
Why convert MP3 to WAV?
The sound stays the same, but a WAV works in places where an MP3 does not.
Editing in a DAW
Audacity, GarageBand, Logic Pro, FL Studio, Ableton Live and Pro Tools all handle WAV natively, without re-encoding on every export.
Burning an audio CD
Audio CDs use 44.1 kHz, 16-bit stereo. Converting the MP3 to WAV with the default settings gives you files ready for CD burning software.
Video editing
Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut Pro work at 48 kHz. A 48 kHz WAV drops onto the timeline without resampling or sync problems.
Platforms that only accept WAV
Some music distributors, radio stations, voice-over marketplaces and phone systems, plus many samplers and DJ players, ask for WAV.

MP3 to WAV FAQ
How do I convert MP3 to WAV for free?
Click Choose files or drag your MP3 files onto this page, pick the sample rate, bit depth and channels, and the conversion starts right away. When a file is done, click Download WAV. It is free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.
Does converting MP3 to WAV improve the sound quality?
No. MP3 is a lossy format: the details removed when the MP3 was made are gone for good. Converting to WAV stores the same sound without further compression, so it will not sound better, only take up about ten times more space. The benefit is that editing and re-saving a WAV adds no new compression loss.
Are my MP3 files uploaded to a server?
No. The converter runs in your browser using FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly, so your MP3 files are read and converted on your own device and never sent to our servers. Only the converter engine itself is downloaded, once.
How do I convert MP3 to WAV on Windows?
